While I consider the setting of my gmail account in Apple Mail the easier thing on earth, there is a lot of people sweating full of frustration because if you want to have your Gmail account up and running YOU MUST ENABLE THE POP OPTION FIRST, here a redundant but easy way to setup your account.

1. First login into your Gmail account.
2. Go to Settings.
3. Select: Forwarding and POP/IMAP from the selections.

4. In the Second Row: POP DOWNLOAD – Select:
a. Enable POP for all mail (even mail that’s already been downloaded)
b. Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on
5. Save and Open Mail.
6. Click Mail, and select Preferences…
7. Open the Accounts tab, and click the plus sign (+) along the bottom to add a new account.

8. Enter your name in the Full Name: field.
9. Enter your Gmail address in the Email Address: field.
10. Enter your Gmail password in the Password: field.
11. Click on Continue/Create.

12. In the Incoming Mail Server, type: pop.gmail.com.
13. Provide your Gmail account and your password.
14. Click Continue.
15. Check the option: Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Verify that in Authentication is chosen option be PASSWORD.

16. Click Continue.
17. In the Outgoing Mail Server, type: smtp.gmail.com. Provide your complete gmail account and your password.

18. Click Continue
19. Check the option: Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Verify that in Authentication is chosen option be PASSWORD.

20. And done. But there are two things to verify.
a. Click your Account and and Select: Server Settings. You will need to change the Server Port from 25 to 587.

21. Click OK and go to the Advance Tab to verify that the Port is 995 and that SSL is checked.

Go check your gmail messages.
